Cell therapies cannot be manufactured at scale. The costs are too high and there is insufficient manufacturing capacity, all driven by the process being too labour intensive.
- Therapy developers use the best tools for the biology, even if these are highly manual.
- Moving away from these for commercialization is too risky due to regulatory resubmission requirements and biological uncertainty.
- Therapy developers are also worried that if they adopt the wrong automation platform now it will be made obsolete when new technologies emerge.
